DASSANECH TRIBE
Ethiopia
The Dassanech are a semi-nomadic people living in southern Ethiopia along the Omo River, near the Kenyan border. Known for their adaptability, they inhabit one of the harshest environments in the region—arid, flood-prone, and constantly shifting.
Their culture is marked by ceremonial beauty: elaborate hairstyles, symbolic scarification, and rituals that celebrate transitions like puberty and marriage. Cattle are central to their economy and spiritual life, while fishing and seasonal agriculture supplement their needs.
Unlike some neighboring tribes, the Dassanech are less isolated, often moving across borders and adapting to new realities. Yet despite this flexibility, they remain deeply rooted in their traditions, passing knowledge orally and preserving their identity in a changing world.

Nothing is fixed. Not the land, not the rules, not the path. Among the Dassanech, movement is the only constant.
